And\r\nwhat an environment it is\u2026The Makryammos beach has been awarded a\r\nBlue\r\nFlag (INSERT LINK FOR BLUE FLAG WEBSITE), which means that it\r\noperates under the highest environmental standards. As for further\r\noutside the coast, the seabed is covered by large Neptune Grass\r\nmeadows (Posidonia Oceanica)\r\nwhich\r\nare home to a wide variety of sea creatures. Unfortunately, the\r\nNeptune Grass seaweed is susceptible to pollution and is rapidly\r\ndisappearing from the Mediterranean. As a response, parts of Thassos\r\nwith wider ecological importance, including Makryammos, are protected\r\nunder the European Commission\u2019s Natura 2000 Networking Program.<\/p>\n\n
In\r\nterms of how the hotel operates, we recycle a range of materials such\r\nas glass, used oil, batteries, scrap metal and packaging materials\r\nlike paper, aluminum, tin can and plastic. Electric\r\ncar chargers are available as well.<\/p>\n\n
We have also installed the ISO Energy system, which turns energy from natural sources into energy that can be utilized in our hotel. Environmental-friendly lights are installed throughout. We make an effort to use water as efficiently as possible. On the northern end of our hotel you will find our greenhouse which grows vegetables for our taverna, herbs for our bar, taverna and restaurant as well as flowers and bushes for our gardens. Composting also lets us fertilize in a natural and efficient way. As for our deer and peacocks, they are fed from the mowed weeds and the vegetable leftovers from the hotel\u2019s kitchen making sure that waste is minimal. <\/p>\n\n
In\r\nthe Mini Club, there are a lot of initiatives regarding environmental\r\nawareness whereby children are encouraged to explore the sea and the\r\nnature of the hotel. For example, the children visit the greenhouse\r\nand collect herbs that they can take home as a souvenir. We hope\r\nactivities like this will help children learn more about the local\r\nflora and fauna and its importance.<\/p>\n\n
